Read Across America will be observed by the New Mexico State Legislature on March 2, 2009, between 10 and 11 a.m., with an appearance in the State Senate of the Cat in the Hat who will appear with the 2009 RAA Honorary Chair, Senator Mary Jane Garcia. A Democrat of District 36-Dona Ana County, Senator Garcia has served in the State Senate since 1988.
Senator Garcia has made it a point of visiting all public schools in her district, an occasion when she meets with young people in their classrooms and talks about the importance of education, reading and participating in the democratic process.
On March 3, 2009 there will be a special Read Across America celebration at Pinon Elementary School in Santa Fe where celebrity readers will read to the students. The Cat in the Hat is expected to make a special appearance. The RAA observance at Pinion begins at 8:20 a.m with RAA activities in the classrooms, followed by celebrity readers until 9:50 a.m. Then the students gather in the cafeteria, beginning at 10 a.m., for a special celebration, including a program, songs and music.
