The Cat in the Hat was a highlight of the Read Across America celebration at Pablo Roybal Elementary School in Pojoaque on May 29th. This is the third consecutive year that NEA has played a pivotal role in the reading awards ceremony.
A total of 122 reading awards were handed out for gains in short-cycle assessments, from fall to spring. Eight students received plaques for exceptional gains which were presented by the Christopher Montalvo Fund. Twelve students were acknowledged for overall gains. The school's activity fund awarded eight $25 gift cards for high scores in oral fluency and reading. Joshua Roybal had the highest gains in MAP reading scores.
Students and teachers focused on the challenge last fall when students were asked to make reading their primary focus. The increases in reading scores have been linked to overall academic gains.
The assessments included DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators for Early Literacy Skills) and NWEA MAP reading scores.
A special thanks to Chelamia Quintana, school librarian, who volunteered as the Cat in the Hat.
