The New Mexico Dropout Prevention Summit will be held in Las Cruces on September 10, 2009. About 500 people are expected to attend. The New Mexico Graduation Summit is being planned by a collaborative planning committee representing a diverse group of leaders from sectors around throughout the state.
Over 400 individuals who attended the Children’s Cabinet town hall in June of 2008 will also be invited to attend. Extensive outreach efforts will be undertaken to ensure that individuals representing non-profit organizations, foundations, businesses, municipal and state government, youth serving organizations, and faith-based groups from across New Mexico will attend the summit.
NEA-NM is part of the planning group.
The summit will begin with opening remarks from the Lieutenant Governor who will welcome attendees and will present the expected outcomes of the summit. Dr. Vernonica Garcia will discuss the current education reform efforts around the state through the PED. One or two young people will share their thoughts on the graduation rate in New Mexico.
Summit participants will be encouraged to focus on policy implications and opportunities to influence policy development at the state and the federal level.
Summit participants will be encouraged and coached to develop action plans that strengthen current efforts and initiate new strategic activity around measurable policy and program supports for young people in New Mexico. These plans will address the state’s drop out rates and will include measurable goals and a timeline for implementation as well as policy recommendations for the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, members of the Children’s Cabinet and members of the New Mexico State Legislature.
